Happy Valley Village is as authentic as it gets if you are looking to get a fix of true northeast chinese village food! The ambiance is the best here as the pots, utensils etc is straight from 70s-80s China! The food is bomb and highly recommend getting one of the giant pot dishes which can be accompanied by bread that they cook on the side of the pot. Please note that the food is northeastern flavoured so certain things like sweet and sour pork are more sour than sweet

Happy Valley Village Restaurant in Richmond specializes in Northeastern Chinese cuisine. The interior is beautifully decorated and the food was great. Their giant iron pot stew is the star of the show, I tried the Mixed Stew and it was delicious and filling. Don't forget to order the corn bread aka 窝窝头 I also really enjoyed the mung bean noodles and the handmade dumplings! Would definitely come back again

Specializing in northern eastern Chinese cuisine! It's not a cheap spot and you may wanna come with maybe 4 to 6 people to fully enjoy the experience. I'd say the range is somewhere between $30-$40 per person. If you're ordering what I did. 1 chicken pot for 4, add beef 1 lamb dumplings 1 mungbean pasta 1 sweet & sour pork 3 Corn steamed buns If you make a reservation, you can book a room that includes AC because it gets hot from the pot ! I really enjoyed the bean pasta and the additional added of the beef into the chicken pot, but if you're someone that doesn't really like to eat around bones

I discovered this place through a foodie's post on Instagram. The ambiance caught my eye, and the food looked very unique--especially the large iron pot! You can choose from different types of hot pots, such as chicken, goose, pork, fish, and Northeastern special. You can also add extra ingredients if you'd like. They offer a variety of cold dishes and pan-fried items, including dumplings. We chose the goose and vegetable hot pot and the pan-fried pork buns. I noticed that many tables ordered the sweet and sour deep-fried pork. The pan-fried pork bun was delicious. The dough was soft and chewy, and the filling was juicy minced pork. The hot pot needed to cook for 20 minutes, and the staff prepared Chinese donuts (both plain and corn-flavored) and placed them on the side of the iron pot. It was a unique way of baking bread--I'd never seen it done like that before. After the hot pot finished cooking, we enjoyed the vegetables, goose meat, and lamb. The Chinese donuts were excellent--the plain one was chewier and softer, while the corn one was crispier. The soup was thick and had a strong flavor. The goose meat was tough but tasted good. I found the addition of potatoes in the hot pot unusual for Chinese hot pot style. Overall, everything was unique and interesting. The ambiance featured traditional, old-style Chinese decor, and the cups and hot water pot had a very cute design. I really like this place; it's great for gathering with family and friends.

Love this restaurant's decoration and design, it really brings you to the 60s and 70s of China. It is also super cozy and enjoyable, so it is a great place for family gatherings and friends to hang out. My family and I ordered the House Special Fish pot along with side dishes like eggplant, Napa cabbage, pumpkin, etc. added. We ordered 2 people serving size, and the portion was huge. However, the pot can be greasy and heavy. We had trouble finishing the pot because we all felt overly stuffed by the oily (from the animal fat) and heavy pot. All pot will come with a choice of meat, so this place is not vegetarian friendly. I personally really enjoyed the tortilla, it has a rich corn taste (really recommend this). Smoked Chicken Bone: the chicken bones are nicely seasoned, it is savory with a hint of spiciness. There's a good amount of meat on the bone, so if you are looking to try their chickens, but don't want a large chunks of meat then this is a great option. Spinach Salad: A very refreshing dish, a great option to balance out the heavy meal. I really like the sweet and sour taste. It also comes with peanuts and hawthorns on top. The staffs are very welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The restaurant can get really busy, but the employees still managed everything well. I give this place a 3.5 for the food, and a 4 for an overall experience.
